FUTURE LADY 1
Future Lady, like other sculptures, emerges from images that freely gravitate around my consciousness. There comes a moment when those images take shape in the creative process; and then the eternal struggle between what I want and what the images want appears.
The Future Lady is a vertical projection of the skull, accentuated by conical hats that could be traced back to dervish figures, 1970s fashion, or even the hoods worn by convicts and penitents.
What I ultimately get—and what disturbs me—is that the gaze, hidden by the hat, leaves the mouth as the only space for communication. Thus, the mouth takes on a value as special as the eyes in those heads where it is cut off by a veil or a mask (a common experience during lockdown).

EMILIO VELILLA
Madrid, Spain, 1959
Emilio Velilla (b. 1959) trained at the Schools of Applied Arts in Madrid. From his early years, he has worked as an independent sculptor. His work has evolved from non-descriptive figuration—with occasional forays into abstraction—to a figuration that moves between explicit naturalism and a more austere style.
Throughout his career, he has held exhibitions in Belgium, Lebanon, Dubai, London, and Madrid, among other cities. His work forms part of private collections and he also has public works in Madrid and Ávila, among other locations.
